| Petrochemical (Petroleum and Chemical) Catalysts
Catalysts and the products made with them are all around us, even though most people know neither what a catalyst is nor what functions catalysts perform. Virtually every polymer is made with a catalytic process, as are a multitude of other chemicals ranging from pharmaceuticals to pesticides. This report, an update of a 1995-96 BCC report, will describe the compounds, products, and markets for catalysts used in chemical and petrochemical reactions/processes done outside of petroleum refineries. It will also describe, in petroleum refining, catalytic processes that take place on process streams to upgrade refinery products. The report will cover products such as heterogeneous catalysts/supports and homogeneous catalysts, as well as processes, technologies, and the major players that supply catalysts. Emphasis will be placed on new developments and technologies that have come on the scene or been commercialized since the last BCC report.

| Combinatorial Chemistry for Materials: What's Ahead Over the past decade, combinatorial methods have become commonplace at pharmaceutical companies developing new drugs. However, these drugs are organic compounds, and use a very restricted palette of elements. Recently, some of this combinatorial methodology has been applied to developing new materials for catalysts, column supports, electronics, and other applications. These applications are not restricted to using organic compounds, and this affects what has been used for drug development. Currently, the materials used in applications such as catalysts, electronics, column supports and others constitute a market worth tens of billions of dollars. Since combinatorial chemistry offers an approach that can shrink the development time and cost for these materials dramatically, there has been enormous interest in this methodology. This report covers this emerging field, and shows the potential markets, both U.S. and globally, from 2000 to 2005 for materials using this technology.

| Performance Fluorine Chemicals and Polymers The presence of fluorine in a chemical molecule or polymer has a striking influence on its chemical and physical properties, often seen in high chemical stability and inertness; for example, in perfluorinated organics and fluorocarbon polymers (e.g., Du Pont's Teflon products). Performance fluorine chemicals also find wide use as chemical intermediaries, as refrigerants for water fluoridation and in toothpaste, for blowing polymer foams, as cleaning agents, as catalysts and in a host of other roles. This report is an update of an earlier BCC report in the mid-1990s by the same author, and describes and quantifies many of the changes in this dynamically changing industry. As before, emphasis is on the unique properties and markets for these materials, including the wrenching changes caused by the Montreal Protocol and concerns over global warming.

| Biocides Biocides are chemicals that kill or retard the growth of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi. If left uncontrolled, these organisms can have a deleterious effect on the food we eat and our health, and will also affect certain industrial products and processes. Biocides have a variety of industrial end uses, including paint, plastics, disinfectants and sanitizers, wood preservatives, cosmetics and toiletries, industrial cooling and boiler water, swimming pools, and the manufacture of paper. The market for biocides has been growing, both in the U.S. and abroad, but has been affected by government regulations on toxic substances, so that new product development and registration has become increasingly costly. BCC analyzes the U.S. market for specialty products, by major product and end use, with emphasis on future trends and opportunities.

Flame Retardancy Industry Review
The flame retardant chemicals industry has historically been driven by regulations and standards. The normal fire-, smoke-, and toxicity-related standards have been joined by environmental standards caused by the alleged environmental impact of halogens and the alleged toxicity of antimony. Although suitable replacements have not been found for these materials in all cases, the environmental concern has served to depress their growth levels from what it would otherwise have been and/or channel the growth into alternative chemical products.
