Wellesley, Mass—According to a new technical market research report, SMART GLASS: TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS (AVM065A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for smart glass was worth $1.0 billion in 2008. This should increase to $1.9 billion in 2013, for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.8%.

The smart glass market is broken down into application segments of transportation, construction and others. Transportation has the largest segment of the market, worth $889.0 million in 2008 and expected to reach $1.6 billion in 2013, a CAGR of 12.3%.

Construction has the next largest market segment, generating $138.7 million in 2008. This segment should grow at a CAGR of 9.5% to reach $218.3 million in 2013.

Other applications for smart glass generated $2.8 million in 2008. This is expected to reach $72.8 million in 2013, for a CAGR of 91.9%.

Smart glass is a category of chromogenic materials. These materials change their light transmission properties when voltage is applied. Smart glass is also referred to as smart windows, switchable glass and intelligent glass.
Five types of smart glass have been developed over the years and are differentiated based on their fabrication technology: liquid crystals, polymer dispersed liquid crystals, electrochromic, suspended particle devices, and reflective hydrides.

Smart glass has current and potential use across diverse industry sectors, including construction, transportation, aerospace, electronics, energy, and consumer products. Smart glass can change from completely transparent to opaque and vice versa just by turning a switch on and off. Darker glass can be used to create a sense of privacy, or for protection from damage due to sunlight.
