GLOBAL MARKET FOR METALS, PRECIOUS METALS AND SECONDARY METALS WORTH $894.2 BILLION IN 2013

Wellesley, Mass.—According to a new technical market research report, THE GLOBAL MARKET FOR METALS, PRECIOUS METALS AND SECONDARY METALS (AVM068A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for metals, precious metals and secondary metals was valued at $649.4 billion in 2008. This is expected to increase to $894.2 billion in 2013, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.6%.

The market is broken down into end-user segments of transportation, building and construction, consumer products and electronics, industrial and electrical, jewelry, packaging, and other. Of these, the transportation segment has the largest share of the market and generated $140.7 billion in revenues in 2008. This should reach $176.5 billion in 2013, a CAGR of 4.6%.

Building and construction is the second largest segment, worth $115.5 billion in 2008. This is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8%, to reach $153.4 billion in 2013.

The “other” end-uses segment has the third largest share of the market. This segment generated $101.3 billion in 2008. This should reach $118.9 billion in 2013, a CAGR of 3.3%.

Over the last 50 years and particularly in the last decade, growing global demand for metals has led to increasing scarcity and higher costs. While the 2008 global economic downturn has created price drops and slackened demand for metals, the market is expected to stabilize and rebound after 2010.

While lower demand has affected production levels of all metals, the production of secondary/scrap metal has been less affected since raw scrap material is readily available, and production costs are generally cheaper. Secondary metal is now a major source of metal feedstock, and secondary metal value is estimated to be a quarter of the entire global market for metals production.
