GLOBAL MARKET FOR COMMERCIAL AMINO ACIDS WORTH $1.3 BILLION IN 2013

Wellesley, Mass—According to a new technical market research report, COMMERCIAL AMINO ACIDS (BIO007H) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for commercial amino acids was worth $1.1 billion in 2008. This is expected to reach $1.3 billion in 2013, for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.6%.

The market is broken down into the application segments of animal feeds, flavorants and specialty applications. Flavorants for human consumption is the largest segment, worth $491.0 million in 2007 and $510.4 million in 2008. This should increase to $588.2 million in 2013, for a CAGR of 2.9%.

The second largest share of the market belongs to animal feeds, which generated $453.4 million in 2007 and $472.4 million in 2008. It should reach $526.4 million in 2013, for a CAGR of 2.2%.

Specialty applications represent the third largest market segment for commercial amino acids, worth $154.5 million in 2007 and $157.6 million in 2008. This should increase to $184.2 million in 2013, for a CAGR of 3.2%.

Amino acids are necessary for the proper development of humans and animals. However, most species do not have the enzymes necessary to produce all the essential amino acids. These acids help form proteins that are necessary for muscle, tissue and organ development. In addition, protein is required for cell metabolism and the formation of hormones and antibodies, which are all critical functions of life. In fact, protein makes up the second largest portion of body weight.

Every protein contains a unique amalgamation containing one or more of the 20 protein amino acids. Individual amino acids may be contained in numerous different protein combinations, and in differing proportions. The acids are combined into linear protein structures demarcated in the genetic code.
