Mobile computing devices have eliminated the boundaries between consumer electronics, telecommunications and computing devices. Without a doubt, they constitute the fastest growing segment in consumer electronics and telecommunication end-user devices.
Mobile computing devices combine two extremely potent concepts of mobility and computing. Miniaturization is inherent in their definition. As a result, the demand for these devices is driven by each of their individual attributes—mobility, computing and miniaturization.
One of the major challenges of analyzing these devices is that they suffer from the same ambiguity in definition as the umbrella term “mobile computing” that is used to describe them. One of the key derivatives of this report is that it will lend clarity to the factors that differentiate these two devices.
To put it in perspective, differentiating between a PDA and a smartphone would not have been a challenging task five years ago. Back then, PDAs were meant to be portable mini-computers, and smartphones were meant to be mobile phones with added data features. The genesis of the challenge lies in the persistent efforts of PDA and smartphone stakeholders to make their devices as all encompassing as possible.
