Therapeutics For Memory And Cognition

Wellesley, Mass—According to a new technical market research report, THERAPEUTICS FOR MEMORY AND COGNITION (PHM054A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for therapeutics for memory and cognition therapeutics was worth $6.7 billion in 2008 and an estimated $7.3 billion in 2009. This will increase to nearly $36.0 billion in 2014, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 37.5%.
 
The market is broken down by disease segment and includes Alzheimer’s, MCI/ACCI, vascular dementia, schizophrenia, Huntington’s disease, HIV-related dementia, Lewy body and genetic diseases. The MCI/ACCI segment has the second largest share of the market, worth $1.6 billion in 2008 and an estimated $1.7 billion in 2009. This segment should reach $$7.1 billion in 2014, for a CAGR of 33.9%.
 
Vascular dementia has the third largest market share, generating $932.0 million in 2008. This is expected to increase to $960 million in 2009 and $4.2 billion in 2014, for a CAGR of 34.3%.

Dementia is not a disease in and of itself, but rather a byproduct of these mentally degenerative conditions. In general, dementia is a nearly irreversible disintegration of all the higher thinking skills that keep us sane and sociable.

There are numerous treatments in clinical development for memory and cognition related diseases and though there are inherently high attrition rates in this therapeutic area, there are enough different mechanisms of action being tested that it is reasonable to expect there will be successes in the next few years. With no effective treatments currently available, a product that does bring improvement will find significant market opportunity.
