Hormone Replacement Therapies: Global Markets
September 29, 2008
Wellesley, Mass—According to a new technical market research report, HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPIES: GLOBAL MARKETS (PHM055A) from BCC Research, the global hormone replacement therapies market generated $14.6 billion in 2007. This is expected to increase to $15.8 billion in 2008 and $25.9 billion in 2013, for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.4%.
The market is divided into types of hormone replacement therapy and includes the estrogen, progesterone and combination therapy segment; the recombinant growth hormone, thyroid hormone and testosterone hormone therapy segment; and the antiestrogens, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), antiandrogens, aromatase inhibitors and luteinizing hormone releasing hormones (LH RH) agonists segment.
The antiestrogens, SERMs, antiandrogens, aromatase inhibitors and LH RH agonists segment has the largest share of the market, and was worth $7.5 billion in 2007 and an estimated $8.3 billion in 2008. This is expected to increase to $13.7 billion in 2013, a CAGR of 10.7%.
The second largest segment is recombinant growth hormone, thyroid hormone and testosterone hormone therapy, which generated $4.1 billion in 2007 and an estimated $4.4 billion in 2008. This should reach $7.0 billion in 2013 for a CAGR of 9.9%.
Estrogens, progesterones and combination therapy represent the third largest segment, worth $3.0 billion in 2007 and an estimated $3.2 billion in 2008. This is expected to increase at a CAGR of 10.1% to reach $5.1 billion in 2013.
Not much change is expected in the hormone replacement therapies market as research is focused on increasing the efficacy and safety and reducing the side effects of existing drugs.
The driving force of this market is the prices of the drug products. The prices have been set very high, thus increasing the revenues. However, the market is also facing deterioration from the approvals of biosimilars drugs, which are causing a threat to the brand drug manufacturers.
