Global Markets and Technologies for Smart Glass
May 18, 2012
Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, GLOBAL MARKETS AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR SMART GLASS (AVM065B) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for smart glass products was valued at nearly $1.6 billion in 2011 and is expected to reach nearly $4.2 billion in 2016, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.6%.
The smart glass market can be broken down into three segments: transportation and aerospace, construction, and electronics and others.
Transportation and aerospace accounted for $1.4 billion in 2011 and the segment is expected to reach nearly $3.9 billion in 2016, a CAGR of 22.1%.
Construction totaled $113.3 million in 2011 and should increase at a CAGR of 14.6% to reach $224.3 million in 2016.
The segment made up of electronics and others, worth $21.9 million in 2011, should reach $66.2 million in 2016, increasing at a CAGR of 24.8%.
Active chromogenic materials are a class of materials that change their light transmission properties when voltage is applied. These materials are more commonly known as smart glass. Other names include smart windows, switchable glass, and intelligent glass. Five types of smart glass have been developed over the years and are differentiated based on their fabrication technologies: liquid crystals, polymer dispersed liquid crystals, electrochromic, suspended particle devices, and reflective hydrides.
Sales of smart glass products are projected to continue growing at a healthy rate during the next five years, driven by increasing demand for rearview mirrors and dimmable windows in the automotive sector; dimmable windows for civilian aircraft; solar-control and energy-saving windows, and privacy glass for the construction sector; and advanced displays for electronics.
This study will be of primary interest to a variety of companies, more specifically companies that manufacture, sell and distribute smart glass and smart glass-based products; fabricate advanced glass products; offer coating and lamination services for the glass industry; supply electrochromic materials, liquid crystals, emulsions, films and coloring chemicals; and companies that provide solar and heat-control devices and related instrumentation. The study also will be useful to executives, directors, operations managers, sales and marketing managers, and strategic planners working within the previously mentioned areas.
In addition to AVM065B, BCC also has published AVM081A, AVM082A, and AVM083A. These reports cover smart glass markets with focuses, respectively, on transportation and aerospace, construction, and electronics and others.
