Central Nervous System Biomarkers: Technologies and Global Markets

June 27, 2011

Wellesley, Mass. – In a recent release, CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM (CNS) BIOMARKERS: TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS (BIO074A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market value of CNS biomarkers was $1.4 billion in 2010. That value is projected to reach nearly $3.2 billion in 2015 as it increases at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.1%.

The CNS biomarkers market can be broken down by application into three segments – discovery, drug development, and molecular diagnostics.

The discovery segment was valued at nearly $1.3 billion in 2010, and in 2015 should be worth $2.5 billion, yielding a CAGR of 14.6%.

The drug development segment, worth $162 million in 2010, should rise in 2015 to $355 million at a CAGR of 17%.

The segment made up of molecular diagnostics was worth only $2 million in 2010, but in 2015 is expected to be worth more than $302 million, a hefty CAGR of 172%. This growth could be attributed to the large number of diagnostic tests that are in the pharmaceutical pipeline. Tests for Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, and multiple sclerosis are expected to be commercialized within the next few years.

A biomarker is an indicator of a normal state, diseased state, or response to a particular treatment. Not only are these indicators measurable, they are also quantifiable. Within the central nervous system, they can be measured in a variety of biological sources such as blood, urine, tissue, or cerebrospinal fluid.

Biomarkers will continue to play an important role in drug research and development, and in diagnostics. They are also vital tools for understanding disease mechanism, developing more effective treatments, and improving the quality of patient care.

Outlook for the global CNS biomarker market is healthy. The major growth drivers are more public-private partnerships from government support, increase in pressure to keep healthcare costs down, rise in the elderly population, and rapid advancement of genomic and proteomic technologies.

There are many potential beneficiaries from this report. Among the primary candidates are biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, physicians, hospitals, and manufacturers of genomic/proteomic supplies and technologies.
