U.S. and Global Markets for Ethical Nutrition in Healthcare
August 31, 2011
Wellesley, Mass. – In a recent release, U.S. AND GLOBAL MARKETS FOR ETHICAL NUTRITION IN HEALTHCARE (FOD029D) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for ethical nutrition products totaled $26.1 billion in 2010. That number is projected to reach nearly $44 billion in 2015 after increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.9%.
The global ethical nutrition market can be broken down into three segments by product type – infant nutrition, enteral nutrition, and parenteral nutrition.
The segment comprised of infant nutrition was worth $12.7 billion in 2010 and is expected to climb to $23.6 billion in 2015, yielding a CAGR of 13.2%.
The segment made up enteral, or oral, nutrition products totaled nearly $9.8 billion in 2010 and should grow to nearly $15.7 billion in 2015, a CAGR of 9.9%.
The segment made up of parenteral, or intravenous, nutrition products totaled $3.7 billion in 2010 and in 2015 should rise to nearly $4.6 billion after growing at a CAGR of 4.4%.
The impact of managed care and demand for cost-effective healthcare has changed the structure of this market dramatically and has altered significantly the strategies that companies use to survive and succeed. The growing number of elderly and critically ill, along with a shift toward home care and increasing inroads into developing countries, have continued to fuel growth.
The decision to begin nutritional feeding is based on a physical evaluation, nutritional assessment, and the patient’s ultimate needs. Major considerations for choosing the feeding route include expected duration of nutritional therapy, aspiration risk, and the potential for, or the actual development of, organ dysfunction. Many patients require parenteral nutrition, either because their gastrointestinal tracts are not functioning or because there is a condition like Crohn’s disease or pancreatitis that may require the gut to rest. When a patient has one of these conditions, there is no alternative but to use the parenteral route.
This report is directed toward decision-makers involved with the various types of nutritional products covered, and designed to present insights into those areas associated with current and future developments.
