Tissue engineering incorporates facets of biology, medicine, and engineering to create products and devices that will improve or replace biological functions. The development of tissue-engineered products involves cell and material combination with engineering methods. Although the term covers a broad range of applications, in practice, tissue engineering is closely associated with applications that repair or replace portions of tissue or whole tissues such as bone, cartilage, blood vessels, bladder, and skin.

The outlook should be positive for tissue engineering as the many advances in this field will have enormous impact on quality of life for many patients by restoring, maintaining, and enhancing tissue and organ functions. Another positive is that tissue engineering has not only therapeutic but also diagnostic value. Artificial cellular structure can serve as an in vitro model for studies in drug metabolism, toxicity, and pathogenicity.

Despite these obvious advantages, this market is developing at a slow pace. After the introduction of skin substitutes and cartilage regeneration products in the last 10 years, little progress has been made, and some of the products have been discontinued. One of the main reasons for slow development is the biological complexity of growing organs and tissue replacements. Furthermore, current technologies are not cost-efficient enough to make these products effective alternatives.
