Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM): Technologies and Global Markets
July 09, 2012
Wellesley, Mass.– According to a new technical market research report, CONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITORING (CGM): TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS (HLC102A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the market for continuous glucose monitoring systems was valued at $183.7 million in 2011. That figure is projected to reach $356.5 million in 2016, a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.2%.
The market for CGM systems can be broken down into three categories based on product type: transmitters and receivers, glucose sensors, and insulin pumps.
Transmitters and receivers accounted for $83.4 million in 2011 and should total $159.3 million in 2016, a CAGR of 13.8%.
Glucose sensors totaled $76 million in 2011 and should reach $140.9 million in 2016, a CAGR of 13.1%.
Insulin pumps accounted for $24.3 million in 2011 and in 2016 that value should reach $56.3 million, a CAGR of 18.3%.
The CGM market is in its initial stage. The need for a user-friendly and convenient glucose-monitoring device is the main factor contributing to the development of the CGM market worldwide. The old method of monitoring glucose was difficult and inconvenient for patients.
Increased awareness of the importance of diabetes management among patients has increased adoption levels of continuous glucose monitors. Recent studies have proved the efficiency of CGMs in managing diabetes; this has further encouraged healthcare practitioners to recommend such devices to their patients. So far, however, CGMs are not meant to replace the conventional glucose meters. Emerging innovations, therefore, have the aim of enhancing precision levels and increasing convenience and usability. Therefore, increased demand coupled with a high level of innovation is making the CGM market extremely dynamic.
Key stakeholders of this report include decision-makers such as CEOs, product and marketing heads, research heads of CGM manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. The report also will be useful to existing companies in the diabetes care segment and to potential entrants into the CGM market. Universities and consulting firms also may gain intensive market knowledge about the CGM market.
