Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, SPECTROSCOPY (IAS004D) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the U.S. market for spectroscopy was an estimated $4.9 billion in 2009, but is expected to increase to $6.5 billion in 2014, for a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6%.
The largest segment of the market, pharmaceutical, was estimated to be worth more than $1 billion in 2009, and is expected to increase at a CAGR of 6.1% to reach nearly $1.4 billion in 2014.
The second-largest segment, biotechnology, is expected to reach more than $1.3 billion in 2014, after increasing at a CAGR of 6.2% from an estimated $990 million in 2009.
Revenue in the industrial chemistry segment was estimated at $970 million in 2009, and is expected to rise to nearly $1.3 billion in 2014, for a 5-year CAGR of 5.7%.
The food and beverage segment was estimated at $855 million in 2009, and is projected to increase at a CAGR of 6.1% to reach nearly $1.2 billion in 2014.
Spectroscopy is the science of measurement and interpretation of electromagnetic spectra. Emissions and absorption of such spectra can be measured and used in a number of different ways to identify and determine physical characteristics of materials. Thus, this is an important commercial as well as academic science, and the market for spectroscopic instruments is a multibillion-dollar one in the United States, and an even larger market worldwide.
A key objective of this study is to present a comprehensive analysis of the current spectroscopic instrumentation market and its future direction, with an emphasis on newer techniques and products. In addition to old standbys like infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, newer and combined (often called “hyphenated”) technologies are adding to the market. The most used combinations, and the ones that BCC Research and most others call hyphenated, are the combining of gas/liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (called GC-MS and LC-MS).
