Biometrics: Technologies and Global Markets
June 24, 2011
Wellesley, Mass. – In a recent release, BIOMETRICS: TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS (IFT042C) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market value of biometrics was $5 billion in 2010. That value is projected to be $12 billion in 2015, after increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.9%.
The global market for biometrics can be broken down by technology group into four segments – fingerprint and automatic fingerprint identification system (AFIS) technologies; face, iris, vein, and voice technologies; hand and signature technologies; and other emerging technologies.
The segment made up of AFIS and fingerprint technologies was valued at $2.7 billion in 2010, and in 2015 should be worth $6.6 billion, yielding a CAGR of 19.6%.
The segment made up of face, iris, vein, and voice technologies, worth $1.4 billion in 2010, should rise to $3.5 billion in 2015 at a CAGR of 19.9%.
The segment made up of hand and signature technologies was worth $215 million in 2010, and should reach a value of $330 million in 2015, a CAGR of 8.9%.
The segment made up of other emerging technologies was valued at $705 million in 2010, and in 2015 should be worth $1.5 billion, growing at a CAGR of 16.9%.
Biometrics is an automated method of recognizing a person, based on a physiological or behavioral characteristic. The most common features that can be measured are the face, fingerprints, hand geometry, handwriting, iris, retinal, vein, and voice.
Because of increased security breaches and transaction fraud, biometrics is a rapidly evolving technology. Used not only in criminal forensics and prison security, it has the potential for many civilian application areas. These include workstation, network, and domain access, single sign-on, application logon, data protection, remote access to resources, transaction security, and Web security.
Trust in electronic transactions is essential to the healthy growth of the global economy. Utilization of biometrics for personal authentication is not only becoming more convenient, but also more accurate than the utilization of passwords and personal identification numbers (PINs).
This report is intended mainly for those who have responsibility for security and protection of civil infrastructure and related applications. Others who will find this report helpful include, but are not limited to, senior executives within biometrics supplier companies, government and commercial end users, consultants to the global biometrics industry, security systems integrators, site security officials, and many others.
