Excipients in Pharmaceuticals
September 19, 2011
Wellesley, Mass. – In a recent release, EXCIPIENTS IN PHARMACEUTICALS (PHM010G) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for excipients totaled $4.9 billion in 2011. That value is projected to reach more than $6.7 billion in 2016 after increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.5%.
The global excipients market can be broken down by material type into three segments – organic, inorganic, and USP (U.S. pharmaceutical) water.
The segment made up of organic excipients held a value of nearly $4.6 billion in 2011, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.6% to reach a value of nearly $6.3 billion in 2016.
The segment made up of inorganic excipients, worth $268 million in 2011, should be worth $350 million in 2016, a CAGR of 5.5%.
The USP water excipients segment totaled $92 million in 2011, and in 2016 that value should reach $114 million, a CAGR of 4.4%.
In terms of volume, the 11.1 billion pounds of excipients consumed in 2011 should rise to 14 billion pounds in 2016, a CAGR in volume of 4.6%.
Among the significant forces that continue to affect the global excipients industry in 2011 are a crisis in the global supply chain, the demands of Quality by Design (QbD), and worries about drug safety. Positive trends include the development of creative ideas in response to the need for new excipients and new levels of cooperation between major players. These forces are reshaping the global market for excipients.
Specific objectives of the report are to identify excipients being used; quantify global market volume; track important developments; analyze the structure of the industry and its driving forces; examine the most active companies and describe how they respond to market demands; and provide data with which the reader can further evaluate the industry.
This report will be of particular interest to excipients suppliers, chemical companies, drug manufacturers, healthcare regulators, and congressional staffers to stay current with today’s market. Additionally, the report should be of value to companies interested in entering or expanding their involvement in the field, senior marketing personnel and executive planners, venture capitalists interested in exploring commercialization opportunities, as well as companies and personnel involved in designing and constructing chemical and excipient manufacturing plants and/or those who service such plants.
