Liver Disease Treatments: The Global Market
June 15, 2009
Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, LIVER DISEASE TREATMENTS: THE GLOBAL MARKET (PHM057A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), global sales of liver disease treatments generated $8.4 billion in 2007, $8.5 billion in 2008, and were expected to decrease slightly to $8.4 billion in 2009. But by 2014, sales are projected to increase to $9.8 billion in 2014, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3% in the five-year period.
The market segment for the treatment of hepatitis has the largest market share, amounting to a projected $4.5 billion in 2009, and is expected to increase to about $9.8 billion in 2014, at a CAGR of 1.2%.
The liver’s sheer complexity makes it susceptible to many different diseases. Most liver diseases are rare, but a few are common, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver disorders in children, alcohol-related disorders, and liver cancer.
Despite exciting advances in the treatment of liver diseases in recent years, a significant number of patients do not achieve successful treatment. This results in a large and growing population of patients with liver diseases. These patients urgently need alternate treatment solutions or novel treatments. Liver disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S., commonly affecting people between the ages of 40 and 60.

Recent research has developed a new way of treating liver failure that could save the lives of millions of people who are waiting for liver transplantation. This treatment includes insertion of stem cells into the damaged liver so that it is encouraged to repair itself and create new tissue. This treatment could replace or completely eliminate the need for liver transplantation.
The markets for liver disease treatments are expected to grow further with the introduction of novel agents like protease inhibitors and polymerase inhibitors. Two most promising candidates, Telaprevir and Boceprevirare, soon will hit the market and are expected to change it, especially with regard to the hepatitis market. Other products from Pfizer, Roche, and J&J are in the pipeline, and these have potential to significantly improve the efficacy of liver disease treatment.
