Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Drugs and Biologics: Technologies and Global Markets

November 18, 2010

Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS) DRUGS AND BIOLOGICS: TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS (PHM069A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the value of the global market for multiple sclerosis drugs and biologics was $11.3 billion in 2010, but is expected to increase to nearly $16.7 billion in 2015, for a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.1%.

The largest segment of the market, made up of biologics, is projected to increase at a CAGR of only 2.5% to nearly $8.8 billion in 2015, after being valued at nearly $7.8 billion in 2010.

The other segment, made up of small molecule compounds, is estimated at nearly $3.6 billion in 2010, but is expected to increase at a CAGR of 17.4% to reach $7.9 billion in 2015.

MS is an autoimmune disease that is estimated to affect more than 2 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. While the number of patients with MS is relatively small compared to other disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, the high price of most treatments (upward of $30,000 annually in the U.S. and $14,000 annually elsewhere in the world) has made MS one of the largest indications, by sales, for several pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

From 2010 through 2015, seven new disease-modifying therapies for MS with unique mechanisms of action are expected to enter the market. A period of strong continued growth for these new products and some existing MS treatments is expected through 2015. Some of these new products are likely to possess improved efficacy over existing therapies, an easier route of administration, an improved dosing schedule, improved tolerability, or the ability to be used in combination with existing products for MS, which should expand the market for MS products enormously.

In this report, special focus is placed on how new products and technologies will affect current market leaders in the MS treatment sector. Profiles are provided of companies projected to have disease-modifying products on the market during the forecast period and on companies with rich or interesting pipelines.

This study will be of interest to members of the pharmaceutical, healthcare, and biotechnology industries. It will also be a valuable resource for investors who have interests in the pharmaceutical sector.
