Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, HIGH-PERFORMANCE FILMS (PLS039E) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the U.S. market for high-performance films is worth an estimated $11.3 billion in 2010, but is expected to increase to $13.5 billion in 2015, for a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.6%.
The largest segment of the market, commodity films, which includes polyethylene types along with PVC and polystyrene, is expected to reach $11.8 billion in 2015, after increasing at a CAGR of 3.4% from the estimated 2010 value of $10 billion.
The high-performance films segment, which includes specialty polyolefins, nylon, PC, fluoropolymers, cyclic olefin copolymer (COCs), polyketones, and others, is expected to increase from a value of $1.3 billion in 2010 to $1.7 billion in 2015, for a CAGR of 5.5%.
High-performance plastic films date back more than 100 years when solvent cast technology was pioneered by Eastman Kodak for the emerging movie industry. The industry has gone through several growth spurts and is now positioned for a front-row seat in the technology battles of the next 5 years.
