Wellesley, Mass—According to a new technical market research report, THERMOFORMED PLASTICS (PLS047A) from BCC Research, the U.S. market for thermoformed plastic technology used 4.9 billion pounds of materials in 2007 and an estimated 5.1 billion pounds in 2008. This is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 4.3% to reach 6.3 billion pounds in 2013.
The market is broken down into the application segments of packaging, appliances, building/construction, automotive, aircraft, industrial/commercial, and consumer products. Of these, packaging has the largest share of the market. Packaging applications used 3.4 billion pounds of materials in 2007 and an estimated 3.6 billion pounds in 2008. This segment should reach 4.5 billion pounds in 2013 for a CAGR of 4.6%
Appliances are the second largest market segment, using 558 million pounds of materials in 2007. This is expected to increase to 584 million pounds in 2008 and 682 million pounds in 2013, for a CAGR of 3.2%.
Building and construction applications have the third largest share of the market. This segment used 286 million pounds of materials in 2007 and an estimated 295 million pounds in 2008. This segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.6% to reach 352 million pounds in 2013.
The most prominent resins thermoformed from plastic sheet include: polystyrene, polypropylene, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which includes both amorphous and crystalline variants, APET and CPET respectively, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymers (ABS), polyacrylates, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and polycarbonates.
Thermoformed plastics compete with injection-molded plastics, some blow-molded plastics along with non-plastic materials such as glass, paper and metals, and have undergone several technical advances.
