Sputtering Targets and Sputtered Films: Technology and Markets
July 13, 2011
Wellesley, Mass. – In a recent release, SPUTTERING TARGETS AND SPUTTERED FILMS: TECHNOLOGY AND MARKETS (SMC037E) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for sputtering targets is estimated to reach $3.3 billion in 2011. That value is projected to reach nearly $5.9 billion in 2015, after increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.3%.
The global market for sputtered films and sputtering targets can be viewed a number of ways, most usefully by total area coated, mass of material consumed, and target units consumed.
In 2011, the total area coated was more than 1.2 billion square meters, and in 2016 that number is expected to reach 1.8 billion square meters, yielding a CAGR of 8.6%.
The total weight of target material consumed in 2011 was 16.6 million pounds (7,550 metric tons), and in 2016 that number should reach 28.8 million pounds (13,101 metric tons), a CAGR of 11.7%.
The number of target units consumed in 2011 was nearly 1.2 million, and in 2016 the number of targets consumed is expected to be more than 1.7 million, a CAGR of 8.4%.
Sputtering allows fabrication of various types of films that find application in areas including mechanical/chemical, energy, electronics, optical coatings, life science, and food packaging. Quality of sputtered films not only depends on process and equipment parameters like vacuum conditions or temperature, but also on the configuration and characteristics of the targets and the critical raw materials used. Target properties such as purity, density, shape, grain size, and distribution directly affect the microstructure at the atomic level of the sputtered film.
The global market for thin film technologies is currently valued at more than $50 billion, where sputtering represents a relevant share of approximately 20% of that market. The unrelenting need for component miniaturization is leading to a greater need for sputtering, but there are other growth factors as well. These other factors pushing future expansion in the sputtering target market include development of new applications, high levels of related R&D activity, good availability of raw materials and process equipment, and an increase in market penetration of the sputtering process in developing countries.
This study will be of primary interest to companies that manufacture, sell, and distribute sputtering targets; fabricate thin film devices; supply raw materials to manufacture sputtering targets; or are planning to enter the sputtering industry. Additionally, executives, directors, operations managers, sales and marketing managers, and strategic planners within the industry will also find the report useful.
