The United States is the world's largest single market for diagnostic equipment, with a value of $13.6 billion in 2002. The emergence and growth of managed health care in recent years has led to cost reductions and an increase in demand for efficiency among clinical laboratories. This has resulted in consolidation among both laboratories and manufacturers, altering the structure of the clinical laboratory market.
The market, in fact, has seen changes at both ends of the testing spectrum. The introduction of total laboratory automation (TLA) using robotics, has evolved for the larger laboratories. Also, the development of inexpensive automated testing devices, known as point-of-care (POC) instruments, has allowed diagnostic testing at the patient's bedside, as well as in smaller laboratories and physician's offices. METHODOLOGY AND INFORMATION SOURCES
