REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

The global market for gas sensors and gas metering equipment including secondary instrumentation is estimated at $2.8 billion in 2004 and expected to rise at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 5.9% to $3.8 billion in 2009.
Sensors and monitors represent the largest and second highest growing segment, rising at an AAGR of 6.3% from $1.3 billion in 2004 to nearly $1.8 billion in 2009.
The smallest segment, secondary instrumentation, also is the fastest growing and expected to reach $512 million in 2009, rising at an AAGR of 7.2%.

INTRODUCTION

For many decades, gas metering and gas sensors/monitors for different applications have used various mechanical measurement techniques. These were developed and perfected to combine high accuracy, long service life and low cost.

This BCC study of gas metering and gas sensors/monitoring presents the results of a worldwide survey of gas flowmeter and gas sensor users. The report gives a critical view of the markets including demand scenarios for different applications. It assesses the role of gas metering as a material balance tool and gas sensors/monitors in detection and control. As such, these are key participants in almost all major markets that include custody transfer of natural gas and account for more than 60% of the global gross domestic product (GDP). The study quantifies demand for gas meters and sensors/monitors by category, product type, application and technology, and assesses the relationships between major consumers and producers.

Focus also is placed on the key challenges to current developments and long-term strategies for developing international standards and their impact on the global economy; the various technologies of gas metering and gas sensing/monitoring, including the critical stages of deployment and how they relate to consumption and demand patterns.

METHODOLOGY

In this report, both historic and current data have been used in the demand analysis. Therefore, the results of the calculations presented here are based on three components: historic analysis of global carbon dioxide demand in the period 2001-2004, estimates for 2004, and forecasted demand for the 2004 to 2009 periods.

BCC, Inc. Research began by contacting gas flowmeter and gas sensor/monitor suppliers to ask what question they would like to have answered in the worldwide survey of gas flowmeter and gas sensor/monitor users. We also used questions that have been asked in previous surveys.

Some companies do surveys in the United States, and then generalize to the world. This method is very unreliable, since geographic and cultural differences exist that have an impact on flowmeter selection. For example, magnetic flowmeters are as popular in Europe as differential pressure (DP) flowmeters are in the United States. Anyone who surveys the United States and then concludes that DP flowmeters are as prevalent worldwide as they are in the United States would be greatly mistaken.

To insure that we obtain a balanced view of the major geographic regions, we decided to interview an equal number of people in the United States, Europe, and Asia. We therefore interviewed a substantial number of gas flowmeter and sensors/monitors users in each region. Within the regions, users in the following countries were interviewed:
