Report Highlights

  • The value of worldwide shipments of CVD equipment reached $3.7 billion by 1999. Shipments are forecast to grow in value by 12.9% and reach $4.2 billion by the end of 2000, and at an average annual rate of 11.0% to reach $7.1 billion by 2005.
  • The value of materials to be deposited by CVD reached $450.8 million in 1999. It is projected to grow by 12.7% to reach $508 million by 2000 and at an average annual rate of 10.9% to reach $849.7 million by 2005.
  • The microelectronics industry, encompassing semiconductors, components, and flat panel displays represents the largest market for CVD equipment, materials and services. This sector will grow at an AAGR of about 12% through the forecast period. The growth of materials in this market will be led by dielectric and diamond-like films as device geometries continue to shrink and levels expand.

INTRODUCTION

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

BCC's goal in conducting this study was to determine the current status of the worldwide market for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) equipment, services, and materials deposited, and assess the growth potential over a 5-year period from 2000 to 2005. The types of equipment and kinds of materials being used for industrial and consumer applications were of particular interest.

BCC had previously published a study on CVD in July 1996; the changes in the market and its future potential since then also were of interest. The key objective was to present a comprehensive analysis of the current CVD industry and project its future course.

REASONS FOR DOING THIS STUDY

CVD has expanded significantly over the past several decades. More sophisticated manufacturing and fabrication techniques and miniaturized products have broadened the demand for vapor-deposited materials. A variety of new and existing materials require properties that can best be delivered by chemically deposited thin films on a wide variety of surfaces.

BCC decided to examine the current position of CVD technologies and materials used in key industries. What materials and types of CVD reactors were being used to meet the demands for more sophisticated and higher performing products were of a need-to-know interest.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STUDY AND FOR WHOM

A study of the different types of CVD equipment and materials used in six major industry groups has been compiled. An overview of the CVD deposition technologies and a worldwide industry structure including leading manufacturers of equipment and service providers is presented. A review the CVD industry's economic competitiveness also is presented. Within each industry, an overview of key applications, the advantages of using the CVD technology, analysis of market factors that will impact demand and project shipments of equipment, materials, and services to 2000 are related. This study will be of interest to those in the microelectronics , manufacturers of cutting tools, automotive and aerospace parts, solar cells and modules, and medical equipment and supplies. It will also be of interest to companies engaged in the manufacture of deposition equipment and materials, and to surface coaters.

SCOPE AND FORMAT

The scope of this study encompasses CVD technologies and materials in terms of applications, properties and processes. BCC analyzes the major types of CVD systems and materials used to manufacture products in the six key industries. The applications are discussed, as well as the properties imparted by CVD. Trends in demand for various products are also reviewed.

Market drivers within each of the industries are also reviewed. The materials deposited by CVD are analyzed by their basic functions such as dielectrics, conductors, and resistance to abrasion, wear, and chemical attack. The value of CVD equipment shipments is projected within each industry by type of format. Values of material shipments are also projected as are CVD service revenues. Technological and economic issues are also discussed. Because this is a worldwide study, BCC analyzes the domestic and international technological issues and economic considerations.

METHODOLOGY

BCC presents an analysis of the values of CVD systems, materials deposited, and services provided by type of reactor, material, and industry segment. The estimated value is what manufacturers and material providers have paid in current dollars. Then, based on surveys, industry growth in relation to the growth of CVD technology, calculate estimates for growth, and forecast shipments for 2005 are analyzed.

INFORMATION SOURCES

BCC interviewed approximately 125 companies to obtain the data for this report. Included were manufacturers of CVD equipment, materials, deposition service providers, industrial and consumer product manufacturing companies, and various end users of the CVD process. Additional data for this study was obtained from government information, trade associations, industry and financial sources, and an exhaustive review of technical papers.
