Global Markets and Technologies for Bioplastics -- Focus on Asia

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

  • The global use of bioplastics was 0.64 million metric tons in 2010 and 0.85 million metric tons in 2011. BCC expects that the use of bioplastics will increase up to 3.7 million metric tons by 2016, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 34.3%.
  • The Asian market segment was 0.14 million metric tons in 2010. This segment increased to 0.19 million metric tons in 2011 and will further grow to 1.1 million metric tons in 2016, a CAGR of 41.1%.
  • The Japanese market for bioplastics is more sophisticated than anywhere else in the world, with a heavy emphasis on high-quality materials used in durable applications. It was worth 59,000 metric tons in 2011 and is expected to reach 0.41 million metric tons by 2016, a CAGR of 47.6% between 2011 and 2016.
