RNA Interference in the Post-Genome Era: Markets and Technologies
February 05, 2008
According to a new technical market research report, RNA Interference in the Post-Genome Era: Markets and Technologies (BIO062A) from BCC Research, the global market for RNA interference (RNAi) will be worth $174.5 million in 2008. This is expected to increase to over $3.6 billion by 2013, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 83.4%.
The market is broken down into applications of research and development (R&D) tools, diagnostics, therapeutics and agriculture. RNAi products are currently sold only into the R&D tools segment. Major consumers of RNAi tools include academic, government, pharmaceutical and biotechnology laboratories. Key applications include functional genomics and drug target discovery and validation. Estimated to be worth $174.5 million by the end of 2008, this segment should reach $424.5 million in 2013, for a CAGR of 19.5%.
Sales of diagnostics, therapeutics and agricultural products are projected to begin during the forecast period. The key driving force for growth will be the demand for RNAi therapeutics. The RNAi therapeutics industry is expected to begin delivering key drugs to the market within the coming 5-year period and should be worth $2.3 billion by the end of 2013. As a therapeutic, RNAi has nearly universal application for all genes, including "un-druggable" targets. This exponentially expands the number of potential drug targets that are available to the pharmaceutical industry.
The diagnostics segment is forecast to be the second largest segment by the end of the study period, worth $601 million.
In agriculture, there is an urgent need for environmentally friendly methods of crop protection. RNAi-based insecticides or genetically modified seeds promise protection against insects and other pests without causing damage to the environment. This segment is expected to reach $247.6 million by the end of 2013.
