MicroRNA Diagnostics and Therapeutics: Technologies and Global Markets
November 08, 2012
Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, MICRORNA DIAGNOSTICS AND THERAPEUTICS: TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS (BIO115A), from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com) , the global microRNA research tools market was valued at nearly $295.1 million in 2011 and should reach nearly $338.3 million in 2012. Total market value is expected to reach $763 million in 2017 after increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.7%.
The market for microRNA can be broken down into three segments: research tools and reagents for microRNA research, the microRNA diagnostics market, and the microRNA discovery market.
The segment made up of tools and reagents for microRNA research is expected to have a value of $278 million in 2012 and $640 million in 2017, a CAGR of 18.1%.
As a segment, the microRNA diagnostics market should total $280,000 in 2012 and $3 million in 2017, a CAGR of 60.7%.
The microRNA therapeutics segment is expected to be valued at $60 million in 2012, and reach $120 million in 2017, a CAGR of 14.9%.
RNA represents one of the three major macromolecules (along with DNA and proteins) essential for cell function. Similar to DNA, RNA consists of a long chain of nucleotides when the sequence of these molecules encodes genetic information. The main difference between the DNA and RNA sequence is the nucleobase uracil in the RNA sequence, while DNA contains thymine (a methylated form of uracil). In addition, unlike DNA, most RNA molecules are single-stranded. Consequently, single-stranded RNA can adopt very complex, three-dimensional structures essential for the proper function and regulation of cellular processes.
RNA is made through a process known as transcription from a DNA strand by an enzyme called RNA polymerase. The initiation of transcription begins with the binding of an enzyme to a promoter: a sequence in DNA “upstream” from a gene. The DNA sequence also controls where the termination of RNA synthesis will occur. After transcription, RNAs are often modified (poly (A) tails and 5’cap) and spliced (“rearranged”).
