Global Markets for Sterilization Techniques

April 20, 2012

Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, GLOBAL MARKETS FOR STERILIZATION TECHNIQUES (CHM016F) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for sterilization equipment was worth nearly $3.8 billion in 2011 and is expected to increase to nearly $5.3 billion in 2016, a projected five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7%.

The sterilization equipment market can be broken down into four segments by process type: filtration, heat, chemical, and radiation.

The filtration segment accounted for nearly $2 billion in 2011 and is expected to reach nearly $3.1 billion in 2016, a CAGR of 9.4%.

The heat segment, worth more than $1 billion in 2011, should experience a CAGR of 3.5% to reach nearly $1.3 billion in 2016.

The chemical segment was worth $381.6 million in 2011 and by 2016 should have a value of $441 million, representing a CAGR of 2.9%.

The radiation segment totaled $347.3 million in 2011 and by 2016 should reach a value of $484.5 million, a CAGR of 6.9%.

Sterilization is a vital function of infection control. Without adequate sterilization of medical devices, pharmaceutical and research liquids and powders, food and beverages, and other objects we touch or ingest, consumers would be exposed to an array of microbes and infectious diseases that could cause great harm.

More than 120 companies operate, in some capacity, within the multifaceted sterilization industry. Many of them take an integrated approach that involves providing a full range of sterilization services. Others specialize in one type of sterilization technology.

The industry is highly competitive and, during the past 10 years, manufacturers have concentrated, for the most part, on enhancing existing equipment and processes, with few breakthroughs in new equipment or process innovations. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are placing more emphasis on expanding services, especially those that add value to profit margins.

In addition to CHM016F, BCC also has published CHM058A, CHM059A, CHM060A, and CHM061A. These reports cover sterilization processes with focuses, respectively, on filtration processes, heat processes, chemical processes, and radiation processes.
