WELLESLEY, Mass., May 3, 2019–Demand for granular activated carbon is driving growth of the U.S. market for inorganic microporous and nanoporous absorbents, according to a report by BCC Research, “Global Markets for Inorganic Microporous and Nanoporous Absorbents.”

The market expects to see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4% through 2023, when it could be worth $2.9 billion.

Major players in the market include Amcol International, Arkema (AKE), BASF (BAS), Calgon Carbon (CCC), ExxonMobil Oil (XOM), and Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties (MLM).

Research Highlights

  • Granular activated carbon leads the market by size, with a 2018 value of $1.1 billion, followed by silica gel at $288.8 million.
  • Environmental applications lead the market by size, with a 2018 value of $633.7 million, followed by consumer use at $586.7 million and oil and gas at $561.1 million.
  • In the consumer use category, the market is led in size by granular activated carbon, with a 2018 value of $212.4 million, followed by clays at $210.2 million and zeolite at $131.1 million.

“Air and water purification applications in the environmental pollution control industry consume the majority of granular activated carbon (GAC) production,” notes report author Andrew McWilliams. “GAC represented 44% of the total market in 2017 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.3% through 2023.”

Potential Applications for Inorganic Absorbents Range from Gas Bulk Separations to Odor Removal

A broad array of potential applications could be used in the inorganic microporous absorbents market. Chief among these is in granulated activated carbon for use in maintaining indoor air quality, gas bulk separations, odor removal and fermentation. Clays, meanwhile, can be used as fillers, carriers and bulk catalysts, and in water purification. Silica gel have promising use in natural gas purification, synthesis gas separation and liquid purification.
