Wellesley, Mass—According to a new technical market research report, THE GLOBAL MARKET FOR DISTRIBUTED ENERGY GENERATION (EGY061A) from BCC Research, the global market for distributed generation (DG) technologies was worth $43.8 billion in 2007 and an estimated $51.0 billion in 2008. This will increase to $127.0 billion in 2013, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.0%.

The market is broken down into fuel-based technologies and renewable technologies.  Fuel-based technologies have the larger share of the market, generating $34.4 billion in revenues in 2007 and an estimated $39.6 billion in 2008. This should reach $93.4 billion in 2013, for a CAGR of 18.7%.

Renewable technologies have the second largest market share, worth $9.4 billion in 2007. This is expected to increase to $11.4 billion in 2008 and $33.6 billion in 2013, for a CAGR of 24.1%.

DG technologies are small-scale electricity production facilities. Unlike conventional power plants that depend on economies of scale to produce power at a marketable price, DG technologies provide localized generation capacity for a wide array of niche markets including peaking power/peak shaving, conversion of waste fuels to electricity, emergency or standby power generation capacity, rural and remote generation, mobile electricity generation, and a variety of other applications. DG technologies are also increasingly being used to generate baseline power for local or regional use, a practice that is especially on the rise for renewable generation technologies.

In conventional systems, the electricity produced at generation facilities must then be conveyed and distributed to its final points of use via power grids. DG facilities, on the other hand, may be located near the intended point of use for the generated electricity (e.g., next to a business, industrial site or home), or may be located at the point where an energy resource is located (e.g., a microhydropower turbine along a water pipeline).

Major DG technologies include microturbines, combustion turbines, microhydropower, reciprocating engines, fuel cells, photovoltaic systems, wind turbines and combined heat and power.
