Markets for Produced Water Treatment Equipment Outside North America
October 22, 2012
Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, MARKETS FOR PRODUCED WATER TREATMENT EQUIPMENT OUTSIDE NORTH AMERICA (ENV015A), from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for produced water treatment equipment was valued at $701 million in 2011 and should reach $733 million in 2012. Total market value is expected to reach $984 million in 2017 after increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.1%
The market for produced water treatment equipment can be broken down between oil and gas applications.
The market for produced water treatment equipment by oil application is expected to have a value of $455 million in 2012 and $557 million in 2017, a CAGR of 4.1%.
The market for produced water treatment equipment by gas application is expected to have a value of $278 million in 2012 and $427 million in 2017, a CAGR of 9%.
Water is the oil and gas industry’s primary byproduct and also its largest volume waste stream. Management of the effluent presents a number of challenges and costs. One of the most problematic issues is the rising volume of wastewater. From current estimated levels of approximately 315 million barrels per day, water volumes are projected to increase to more than 372 million barrels per day by 2017. Some industry observers suggest water production could reach five times the level of oil production, or 430 million barrels per day, by that time. The United States alone generates approximately 70 million barrels per day, or 25 billion barrels per year.
Produced water diminishes the profitability of virtually all oil wells, but especially those in mature fields, or nearly 70% of all oil produced worldwide. Produced water volumes tend to increase dramatically as mature fields pass peak production levels. As the percentage of oil declines, the percentage of water increases. For crude wells nearing the end of their productive existence, water can amount to 98% of the material brought to the surface. Substantial increases in produced water volumes are forecast since producing oilfields continue to mature.
