Global Market for Bottled Water Products to See 10.8% Annual Growth through 2022

August 15, 2018

WELLESLEY, Mass., Aug 15, 2018– Despite growing concerns regarding environmental pollution, the global market for bottled water products has grown significantly in the last few years and is expected to continue growing through 2022,  according to a new report from BCC Research

The global market for bottled water products was worth $190 billion in 2016 and is expected to reach $342 billion in 2022, growing at an estimated compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.8% from 2017 through 2022, as noted in the recently published report Global Markets for Bottled Water Products.

Still water makes up the largest category of the market for bottled water products, accounting for 65% of the market share in 2016. Sparkling water or carbonated sales are strong in a minority of countries, including Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, the Netherlands and Germany.

Research Highlights

  • PET bottles account for the greatest share of the global market in terms of packaging type, with a segment valuation of $155.8 billion in 2016 that is expected to reach $274.6 billion in 2022.
  • By distribution channel, supermarkets and hypermarkets lead the global market for bottled water products, representing 54.1% of the market share in 2016 and growing at a CAGR of 11.0% from 2017 through 2022
  • Most bottled water companies have introduced the mini pack of 250 ml bottled water for daily use. Around 20% of the population buy at least one 250 ml of bottled drinking water in a day.

“Rising concerns regarding the high sugars in carbonated soft drinks are shifting the consumer’s focus from flavored and carbonated soft drinks to flavored and carbonated bottled water,” said Natraj Pandal, BCC Research analyst and author of this report. “The carbonated bottled water segment is presently the second dominant segment of the market and is expected to grow at a healthy pace throughout the forecast period as well.”

Bottled Water Market Penetration in Developing Economies

The bottled water market in Asia-Pacific is expected to dominate the global market in terms of market share owing to high demand for bottled water from India, China, Thailand and Indonesia. The region will remain ahead of other regional markets in terms of overall uptake of bottled water owing to the rising per capita consumption of bottled water across urban areas in developing economies. Also, the easy availability of bottled water through a well-developed supply chain for bottled water products in the region will enable the bottled water market in the region to gain traction.
