Wellesley, Mass., February 11, 2016 – Although gastric bypass procedures are decreasing in the U.S. and Asia, this procedure type still remains the gold standard weight loss procedure among all bariatric procedures. BCC Research reveals in its new report that adoption of minimally invasive (MIS) laparoscopic procedures is growing as a bariatric surgery procedure.
Bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) is a combined term used for a variety of weight-loss surgical procedures that deal with surgical treatment of people who are morbidly/severely obese and prescribed to lose weight to treat, as well as prevent, obesity-related comorbidities. The three most commonly performed procedures are gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding
The global market for bariatric surgery devices is expected to reach $1.4 billion and $2.2 billion in 2015 and 2020, respectively, reflecting a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.8%. (These figures include implanted gastric devices, gastric bypass devices and gastric removal devices used in bariatric surgery.) Gastric bypass devices (endocutter, stapling devices, curved shears, and other instruments), which is the largest product segment of the market, accounted for about a 43.4% share in 2014. Gastric removal devices are the fastest-growing device segment due to increasing acceptance of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) procedures.
The global epidemic of obesity and type-2 diabetes has accelerated the growth of the bariatric surgery devices market. The incidence of bariatric surgeries continues to rise, increasing the global market for bariatric surgical devices, along with increased reimbursement for key bariatric procedures such as SG and gastric bypass. However, the gastric banding procedure is declining from waning interest in restrictive devices involving gastric bands and intragastric balloons. But gastric removal devices are boosting the overall bariatric surgery devices market.
Patients and surgeons are more inclined toward less invasive/noninvasive procedures. New technologies also are reducing the invasiveness of existing procedures and are expanding the patient population for whom surgery is a realistic option on cost and/or medical grounds. As a result, the trend from open procedures to minimally invasive (MIS) laparoscopic procedures is leading market growth.
“MIS procedures are widely accepted and in use for bariatric procedures. However, improved techniques, or the development of new surgical technologies, can alter the cost-difficulty equation for a typical procedure over time, so it is used more widely,” says BCC Research analyst Ritu Thakur. “Endoscopic bariatric surgeries can potentially fulfill the need for a minimally invasive option in one or more different capacities. For example, they may be used as an early intervention to offer weight loss or weight stabilization for those patients who do not yet qualify for traditional bariatric surgery.”
