Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) Sensors: Technologies and Global Markets
July 10, 2012
Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, SURFACE ACOUSTIC WAVE (SAW) SENSORS: TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS (IAS039A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for SAW sensors was valued at nearly $1.1 billion in 2011 and is projected to reach nearly $1.9 billion in 2016, a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.8%.
The global market for SAW sensors can be broken down into five regions: Asia, theAmericas, Europe,Southeast Asia, and the rest of the world.
Asiaaccounted for $353.7 million in 2011 and is expected to reach $907.8 million in 2016, exhibiting the highest CAGR of any region at 20.7% for the five-year period.
TheAmericas, worth $274.5 million in 2011 are projected to account for $309.3 million in 2016, a CAGR of 2.4%.
Europe, worth $262 million in 2011, should be valued at $366.9 million in 2016, a CAGR of 7%.
Southeast Asiawas valued at only $54.5 million in 2011 but is expected to experience a 20.6% CAGR, reaching $138.9 million by 2016.
The rest of the world totaled $115.4 million in 2011 and in 2016 should account for $136.6 million, a CAGR of 3.4%.
SAW technology allows the sensing of pressure, strain, torque, temperature, and mass. Such applications include the automotive industry (torque and tire pressure sensors), medical applications (chemical sensors), and industrial and commercial applications (vapor, humidity, pressure, and mass sensors). Acoustic sensors are competitively priced, inherently rugged, very sensitive, and reliable. Some SAWs can be passively and wirelessly interrogated, thus requiring no power source.
The transformation from wired connections to wireless transmission has accelerated greatly in recent years. As a result, wireless electronic components in theU.S.electronics industry, including surface acoustic wave devices, experienced healthy growth in 2011. The last two years have been a period of tremendous growth for the surface acoustic technology industry. The increase in production of fourth-generation wireless devices in theUnited Statesand other countries having advanced cell phone infrastructures has swelled the need for SAW filters, as did the significant increase in the use of media tablets by consumers. Moreover, many industries such as the automotive industry are relying on SAW transducers to serve as effective detection sensors in many applications. The key to benefiting from the augmentation in demand for SAW technology lies in identifying the regional markets experiencing expansion and the applications fostering these growths.
This study will be of interest to the sensor technologies industry, surface acoustic wave filter and duplexer manufacturers, distributors, system integrators, and research institutions. It also will be of interest to manufacturers of wireless devices and systems, communication technology developers as well as manufacturers of information technology hardware devices, semiconductor device manufacturers, and electronic component manufacturers.
In addition to IAS039A, BCC has also recently published IAS054A, IAS055A, and IAS056A. These reports cover surface acoustic wave sensor markets with focuses, respectively, on Europe, Asia, and theAmericas.
