May 13, 2010

Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, COMMERCIAL BUILDING AUTOMATION PRODUCTS: TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS  (IFT010B) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the value of the global market for commercial building automation products was $62.4 billion in 2009, but is expected to increase to nearly $73 billion in 2014, for a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.1%.

The largest segment of the market, made up of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, was valued at nearly $30 billion in 2009. That is expected to rise at a 5-year CAGR of 2.8% to reach nearly $34.2 billion in 2014.

The second-largest segment, lighting, is projected to reach a value of more than $15.2 billion in 2014, after rising at a CAGR of 2.4% from its 2009 value of more than $13.5 billion.

Energy management systems make up the third-largest segment of the market, with a value of more than $10.8 billion in 2009. That is expected to rise to $13.2 billion in 2014, for a CAGR of 4.1%.

The fourth-largest segment is made up of security systems. It is expected to increase in value at a 5-year CAGR of 3.5%, from nearly $5 billion in 2009 to more than $5.9 billion in 2014.

The smallest segment is made up of building management systems (BMS). That is projected to rise from $3.3 billion in 2009 to nearly $4 billion in 2014, for a CAGR of 3.8%.

Buildings have become so large and the underlying technology so complex that overseeing all of the different components has been difficult. Facilities managers have been searching for more integrated approaches toward delivering services to tenants.  Building automation technology ties all of the different elements (e.g., building management systems, HVAC, energy management, lighting, security) into a cohesive whole.  The goal of this report is to provide an understanding of the market factors, state-of-the-art developments, and economic influences driving the building automation market.

This report was prepared for individuals who are interested in the building management systems market. Those individuals could include vendors involved in the research, development, manufacturing, or marketing of these products.
