Customer-Facing Retail Technologies: Global Markets

June 29, 2011

Wellesley, Mass. – In a recent release, CUSTOMER-FACING RETAIL TECHNOLOGIES: GLOBAL MARKETS (IFT075A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market value of customer-facing technologies was $7 billion in 2010. That value is projected to approach $9.5 billion in 2015, increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.3%.

The customer-facing retail technology market can be broken down into four segments – point of sale (POS), electronic fund transfer point of sale (EFT-POS), self-checkout systems, and mobile self-scanners.

The POS segment was valued at nearly $4.5 billion in 2010, and in 2015 should be worth $5.5 billion, yielding a CAGR of 4.3%.

The EFT-POS segment, worth $2 billion in 2010, should rise in 2015 to nearly $2.8 billion at a CAGR of 6.9%.

The segment made up of self-check out systems was worth $483 million in 2010, and in 2015 is expected to be worth $1.1 billion, a CAGR of 17.9%.

The smallest segment, made up of mobile self-scanners, was valued at $54.4 million in 2010, and in 2015 should be worth $119 million, a CAGR of 16.9%.

Before POS terminals, retailers were using cash registers, but these eventually gave way to electronic cash registers. These could record sales transactions but could not perform other tasks such as an inventory check. In the late-1980s, retail software with more data capability was introduced. Currently, we have next-generation POS terminals that can not only capture product and price information but also can aid in other areas such as resource planning and product performance analyses.

Retail is a low-margin, highly competitive industry in which retailers continually look for solutions that will reduce operating costs. As a result, retailers are increasingly investing in multifunctional, next-generation, point-of-sale terminals that not only reduce the retailers’ overall cost of ownership but also enables improved asset protection and appearance to their customer base.

The report has been written for the entire retail community, and will be especially helpful to technology vendors, distributors, and retailers. Others in the retail community that will find the report useful include system integrators, resellers, consultants, financial institutions, and venture capitalists.
