Antiemetics: Technologies and Global Markets
June 24, 2011
Wellesley, Mass. – In a recent release, ANTIEMETICS: TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS (PHM070A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global sales of antiemetics were $2.5 billion in 2010. That value is projected to be $3.6 billion in 2015, after increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.4%.
The global market for antiemetics can be broken down into four segments – 5-HT3 receptor antagonists; steroids, cannabinoids and benzodiazepines; NK1 receptor and dopamine antagonist and anticholinergics; and H-1 receptor antagonists.
The segment made up of 5-HT3 receptor antagonists was valued at $1.1 billion in 2010, and in 2015 should be worth $1.3 billion, yielding a CAGR of 3.6%.
The segment made up of steroids, cannabinoids and benzodiazepines, worth $558 million in 2010, should rise to $838 million in 2015 at a CAGR of 8.5%.
The segment made up of NK1 receptor and dopamine antagonist and anticholinergics was worth $582 million in 2010 and should reach a value of $1.1 billion in 2015, a CAGR of 13.3%.
The segment made up of H-1 receptor antagonists was valued at $305 million in 2010 and should be worth $401 million in 2015, a CAGR of 5.6%.
Antiemetics are drugs or agents used to treat, prevent, or help fight nausea and vomiting. Emesis, more commonly known as vomiting, is a prominent side effect of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, but it is not a disease; it is an indication of a stressed physiological condition.
The market of antiemetics and cancer chemotherapy can now be considered interdependent. Many patients delay or avoid their treatment due to fear of emesis, but advancements in antiemetic drugs are reducing this fear and causing the market for both cancer chemotherapy and antiemetics to rise.
This study will be most useful to manufacturers and users in the antiemetics industry, while biotechnical companies, physicians, the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries, hospitals, and research institutes may also find the report informational.
