Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, EMI/RFI: MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGIES (PLS005J) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for electromagnetic interference/radio frequency interference materials and technologies is expected to reach $4.5 billion in 2011. That is expected to increase to nearly $5.2 billion in 2016, for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.8%.
The largest segment of the market, made up of conductive coatings, is expected to increase at a 5-year CAGR of 1.9%, rising from an estimated $1.7 billion in 2011 to nearly $1.9 billion in 2016.
The second-largest segment, made up of metal cabinets, is projected to reach $755 million in 2016 after rising at a CAGR of 3.1% from its 2011 value of $649 million.
The next-largest segment, made up of conductive plastics, is expected to increase from $504 million in 2011 to $581 million in 2016, for a five-year CAGR of 2.9%.
The smallest segment, made up of laminates/tapes, is projected to be valued at $174 million in 2016 after rising at a five-year CAGR of 6.2% from its 2011 value of $129 million.
The segment made up of miscellaneous components and primary metals is expected to reach nearly $1.8 billion in 2016. Its 2011 value is estimated at nearly $1.5 billion and the five-year CAGR is projected at 3.5%.
The objective of this report is to review and analyze electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) problems that are encountered in operation of electronic equipment and implications for plastics and competitive materials/technologies used to suppress that interference.
The size and the growth of the global market for EMI/RFI shielding products is a function of several factors. Shielding not only closely follows the demand for electronic devices and components but also is a valuable resource to assist manufacturers in complying with ever-changing safety and performance regulations. Consequently, the study summarizes the somewhat muddled global regulatory environment.
Technologies and materials specific to EMI/RFI shielding are identified and analyzed for their impact on plastics and other materials within a context of trends in components and devices used in the electronics and other industries such as medical, automotive, and consumer products.
Technologies that could possibly replace some of the current shielding materials could include absorbent EMI products to counter new electronic technologies such as Bluetooth and high-speed LAN systems. Fiber optics would reduce need for electromagnetic compliance systems, but probably not likely to impact EMC needs at the device level.
The major shielding options include: metal cabinets, conductive coatings (electroless plating, vacuum metallization, and conductive paints), conductive plastics, laminates/tapes, and a widely diverse “miscellaneous” category that includes gaskets, metal sheet/foils, filters, connectors, wire mesh, etc.
Metal cabinets will show the largest growth due to several factors led by increased use of higher frequencies. Many of the other EMI/RFI shielding types in the miscellaneous category are undergoing solid growth.
This market research offers resin manufacturers, plastics compounders, and plastics processors with an analysis of factors that impact on their ability to serve the electronics industry with neat and/or filled resins.
