Metallocene Technologies and Global Markets
November 27, 2012
Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, METALLOCENE TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS (PLS030B) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global metallocene resin/elastomer market was reached nearly 11.4 billion pounds in 2012 and should reach nearly 11.9 billion pounds in 2013. Total market volume is expected to reach 14.8 billion pounds in 2018 after increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5%.
The global market for metallocene resins and elastomers can be broken down into five major segments: flexible non-food packaging, shrink/stretch films, flexible food packaging films, consumer industrial packaging, and non-packaging films.
Flexible non-food packaging is expected to have a volume of nearly 4.2 billion pounds in 2013 and 5.1 billion pounds in 2018, a CAGR of 4.2%.
As a segment, shrink/stretch films should total nearly 3.3 billion pounds in 2013 and 4 billion pounds in 2018, a CAGR of 4.4%.
Flexible food packaging films are expected to total nearly 1.7 billion pounds in 2013 and 2.1 billion pounds in 2018, a CAGR of 4.3%.
The advent of metallocene-LLDPE coupled with polyolefin plastomers (POPs) and polyolefin elastomers (POEs), and more recently polypropylene and EPDM variants, among others, has transformed these materials into a significant market.
Although significant commercial volumes of metallocene materials have been attained and compound annual growth rates (CAGRs) are expected to be about 4% to 5%, market penetrations are relatively low because of the sheer size of traditional polyethylene and polypropylene resin and elastomer markets.
