U.S Polypropylene Resins and Elastomers Market To Ship 8.2 Billion Pounds In 2014
February 02, 2010
Wellesley, Mass. – According to a new technical market research report, POLYPROPYLENE RESINS AND ELASTOMERS (PLS049A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), U.S. companies will distribute an estimated 6.9 billion pounds of polypropylene resins in 2009. That is expected to increase to 8.2 billion pounds in 2014, for a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.7%.
The food and industrial/consumer packaging segment has the largest share of the market, distributing an estimated 2.8 billion pounds in 2009. The segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4% to reach 3.4 billion pounds in 2014.
The healthcare packing segment has the second-largest share of the market with 901 million pounds distributed in 2009. That figure is expected to increase to 1.1 billion pounds in 2014, for a CAGR of 4.5%.
Distributions in the automotive segment were estimated to have dipped to 496 million pounds in 2009 from 540 million pounds in 2008, but are projected to rebound to 568 million pounds in 2014, for a 5-year CAGR of 2.7%.
The next-largest segment is for appliance applications, which is expected to distribute 507 million pounds in 2009, rising to 560 million pounds in 2014, for a CAGR of 2%.
Although polypropylene is classified as a commodity, thermoplastic, improvements in many properties, a significant part of which is accomplished via reinforcing agents and polypropylene copolymers, have positioned many polypropylene grades into the realm of several engineering thermoplastics.
This report analyzes about a dozen key applications, many of which are segmented into further detail, especially the automotive, medical, healthcare packaging, rigid food packaging markets, among others. It would thus be of special interest to many of those in the plastics industry, including commodity thermoplastic producers (polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, polystyrene, etc.), plastic film producers, food and healthcare packaging companies, and businesses involved in the manufacture of autos, appliances, and housewares.
