INTRODUCTION

REASONS FOR STUDY AND ITS IMPORTANCE

This study is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the market for environmental biotechnology markets. With the ever-increasing volumes of wastewater generated by municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities, companies, water authorities and organizations are attempting to find cost effective and efficient means of treating waste streams. In addition, environmental biotechnology offers solutions to treating both organic and toxic wastes found at contaminated sites across the country and worldwide. Treatment products and services are being pursued that are effective without adversely affecting the environment. Biotechnology promises to offer less expensive solutions for bioremediation of waste through natural microorganism, enzyme, and supplemental nutrient products along with new developments in biotechnology such as genetic engineering.

It must be noted, that the current state of the U.S. and global economies, which analysts project may be headed toward recessionary times and commercialized market instability, should not hurt the market for environmental biotechnology. Rather, an economic downturn will create a certain need for biological waste treatment since it is one of the most cost-effective means in treating a variety of waste streams.

The importance of this study lies in its current evaluation of the market for products and the identification of end-users with market potential forecasted through 2006. The study also analyzes market dynamics, regulation, and technology and their interconnecting effect on the state-of-the-industry. Furthermore, a need exists for detailed information concerning this segment of the biotechnology industry. Most studies and informational resources discuss the environmental biotechnology industry in very general terms and have not pinpointed its exact size and nature. While pharmaceutical and food/agricultural segments have received the most attention and analysis, the environmental biotechnology sector has received minimal attention by the general public creating a real need for information.

OBJECTIVE OF STUDY AND ITS CONTRIBUTION

This study intends to provide a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the current and forecasted market through 2006 for environmental biotechnology products and their use in a variety of applications. This study contributes information and data that provides a, "total picture," of the industry presented herein. The study intends to correlate data that has been calculated from many sources including those manufacturers that participate in this market. The objective of this study is to give those involved with, and interested in environmental biotechnology a look at manufacturers, applications, regulations, institutional and commercial developments, and international markets.

AUDIENCE FOR REPORT

This study should be considered a focal point for anyone interested in the state-of-the-industry of environmental biotechnology. This study is valuable to those that manufacture and/or distribute environmental biotechnology products including microorganisms, enzymes and nutrients. Also manufacturers of competing products, such as chemical treatments, will find this study useful in understanding the dynamics of this emerging market sector. The report is also designed to inform those involved in the management and operations of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. These may include local waste authorities, private water and wastewater management company personnel, industrial manufacturers, such as chemical producers, mining operators, pulp and paper processors, as well as farming, livestock, and food service industries that must find treatment alternatives to deal with significant amounts of waste. With the increased use of innovative technologies for the cleanup of contaminated soil and groundwater, consultants, engineering contractors, project managers, and government personnel will be able to analyze the usefulness of bioremediation products and services as a reliable and cost-effective alternative to traditional cleanup approaches.

Likewise, those participating in research and development activities through academic institutions, government programs, or private sector initiatives are presented with new developments and technological advances in potential new products and applications. Investors, banks, legislators, and real estate developers and others that require information about waste treatment and cleanup will be able to use this study in their assessment of the financial risks and rewards in using environmental biotechnology products and services.

SCOPE AND CONTENT OF REPORT

This study contains comprehensive data concerning the products and applications involved in the use of microorganisms and enzymes for waste treatment. This study will give insightful information from the perspective of the manufacturer and the customer. Major product manufacturers are profiled and application markets are extensively reviewed. Detailed forecasts and analysis provide vital market information on product sales, application markets and customers, and international opportunities in a comprehensive manner.

Applications for wastewater treatment and bioremediation processes along with other treatment markets will be studied with information about current and future needs. The historical and current significance of government regulations, patents, and research and development (R&D) will be reviewed in their vital role in effecting the market dynamics of biotechnology for waste treatment with emphasis on future product sales. Also, the growing international markets for microorganism and enzyme products will be listed. Information concerning U.S. exports and leading international companies will be analyzed.
