INTRODUCTION

According to the United Nations, effective control of the generation, storage, treatment, recycling and reuse, transport, recovery and disposal of hazardous wastes is of paramount importance for proper health, environmental protection and natural resource management, and sustainable development. Hazardous waste treatment and disposal is a pressing domestic political issue in a growing number of countries, as well as a diplomatic concern because of abuses such as the dumping of hazardous wastes at sea and international traffi cking in hazardous wastes.
