We've come along way since Spacewar! and Pong appeared in the 60s and 70s, respectively. Spacewar! was developed by students at MIT as a lark. But Pong was the first video game to hit the masses, and it received near universal acclaim.

But things are indeed changing. Game design and development is an established major now in several schools. And there are organizations, chief among them the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), providing support, information and ultimately opportunities to developers around the world. These developers are steering what is becoming the single largest sector of the entertainment industry, whose only sin is being a little too new.
