Company Overview
ABB Ltd. is a technology, electrification, and automation company. It is organized into the following segments based on products and services: electrification, motion, process automation, robotics, and discrete automation. The remaining operations are included in the corporate and other categories.
ABB’s robotics and discrete automation business offers microfactories, robotics, machine automation, and factory automation solutions. It operates in approximately 100 countries across three regions. As of December 2023, ABB had a portfolio of roughly 26,000 pending patent applications and granted patents, of which approximately 5,700 are pending. The portfolio includes approximately 3,600 utility models and design rights, of which 170 are pending applications.
ABB plans to spin off its robotics division in its entirety. It is planning to propose this to shareholders at its Annual General Meeting in 2026. If approved, the robotics business will become an independent, publicly traded company in the second quarter of 2026.
