1895 Ångpanneförenigen (The Southern Swedish Steam Generator Association) was founded in Malmö on February 23, 1895. It was the first Swedish steam-pipe association to represent the interests of owners of steam generators and other pressure vessels.
1964 The Central and Northern Swedish Steam Generator Association merged with Ångpanneförenigen after expanding their business to include electrical engineering under the name Ångpanneföreningen (ÅF).
1971 ÅF bought electrical installations consultant RNK Installationskonsult AB and became a wholly owned subsidiary.
1994 ÅF-Industriteknik acquired Inometer, which formed a technical unit within the business area focusing on communication technology.
2004 ÅF acquired the Finnish company CTS Engineering Oy, which has about 260 employees, to realign operations and establish ÅF as a consulting company.
2012 ÅF acquired the Norwegian project management company Advansia, which has around 120 employees. ÅF and Epsilon merged to form an engineering and consulting company with about 7,000 employees.
2016 ÅF acquired Erstad & Lekven Oslo, Alteco, Edy Toscano in Switzerland, Reinertsen’s Swedish infrastructure, construction, and installation operations, and merged with Reinertsen in Norway.
2019 ÅF acquired Pöyry PLC to form AFRY, an international engineering, design, and advisory company. The company aimed to strengthen its platform for global growth and enhance its ability to take on larger and more complex projects, particularly in sustainability, digitalization, and future energy solutions.
2022 AFRY established a new division, AFRY X, to strengthen AFRY's digital offerings and bring together its digital expertise and technologies.
2023 AFRY acquired SOM System Kft. and TTSA Mérnökiroda Kft (together “SOM”), two Hungarian nuclear safety consulting companies, to scale globally in decarbonisation, energy, and biobased materials.
2024 AFRY acquired Carelin Oy, a Finnish company that provides project management, energy, asset care, and site care services in the renewable energy market, strengthening its position in clean energy.
