Company Overview

Aperam BioEnergia established its presence in the Jequitinhonha Valley in the 1970s by considering the environmental regulations of the time. Its eucalyptus plantations, spanning across the municipalities of Capelinha, Itamarandiba, Veredinha, Turmalina, and Minas Novas, presently yield 220,000 tons of charcoal every year and support more than 1,200 jobs. The company maximizes the value of its forest resources, prioritizing supply to Aperam South America Steel Plant while maintaining a strong focus on health, safety, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

The company produces biomass in the form of wood and charcoal from cultivated eucalyptus forests in Brazil that are then used as a substitute for coke at its Timóteo steel production facility. It allows for the complete eradication of the use of extractive coke and reduces the CO₂ footprint significantly. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifies the company’s forest management. Aperm BioEnerhia manages the eucalyptus forests for planting and cultivation, with a total area of 134,000 hectares in 2023, which was 127,000 hectares in 2022.

The company focuses on continuous development of Eucalyptus and Corymbia clonal seedling technology. Over 6,000 high-quality genetic materials were developed for these specific clones. The development of such materials offers high productivity and high forest performance.
