Company Overview

Athena Diagnostics Inc., a subsidiary of Quest Diagnostics, markets genetic testing services to physicians, hospitals and reference laboratories. The company specializes in testing for neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, and other neuromuscular and developmental disorders.

In March 2015, Athena launched a whole exome sequencing service, Neurome Neurological Exome test, for rare neurological disorders. The test was developed by Personalis and is run at Personalis’s CLIA-certified laboratory in Menlo Park, California.

The Neurome test addresses a segment of the neurology market for patients who have a neurological disease whose cause is unknown but is thought to be of genetic origin. The test also can be used with patients whose condition is extremely heterogeneous and where more targeted testing has not been successful in making a diagnosis.

Athena has a strong commitment to using NGS as a strategic platform for its tests, and the majority of its genetic tests use NGS.
