1992 Boston Dynamics was founded by Marc Raibert and colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The company spun out of the MIT Leg Lab, where Raibert worked on dynamic robots.
2004 The company launched BigDog, its first quadruped robot, to assist soldiers in carrying heavy loads over rough terrain. It also featured a dynamic system that allowed it to recover from slips and pushes.
2013 The company launched Atlas, a bipedal hydraulic humanoid robot developed with funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The robot was initially designed for a variety of search and rescue tasks.

2021 Hyundai Motor Group acquired the controlling interest in Boston Dynamics from SoftBank for $1.1 billion to expand its portfolio as a smart mobility solution provider.
2024 Boston Dynamics and Toyota Research Institute (TRI) partnered to accelerate the development of general-purpose humanoid robots utilizing TRI’s Large Behavior Models and Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot.
