2000 The Gas Technology Institute (GTI) was founded in 2000 when the Gas Research Institute (GRI) and the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) merged.
2016 GTI acquired BKi, a professional energy services and consulting firm serving the energy efficiency, energy supply, and alternative transportation markets, to expand its customer service in water efficiency and advanced power generation with carbon capture and storage.
2017 GTI acquired Frontier Associates LLC, a professional services firm in Austin, Texas, to increase customer adoption of efficient home and commercial building technologies.
2018 The institute partnered with Purdue University’s Center to convert shale gas into transportation fuels and chemicals using a portable, modular processing plant network.
2019 The institute partnered with the Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI), a unit of the Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO), to develop smaller power plants with reduced emissions.
2022 The Gas Technology Institute announced it has updated its name to GTI Energy to reflect the breadth of its mission and capabilities across energy systems.
