Company Overview

LivaNova plc is a medical device manufacturer that was formed by the merger of Sorin and Cyberonics in 2019. Cyberonics manufactured neuromodulation devices. LivaNova has two business segments: Cardiovascular and Neuromodulation. Its Neuromodulation business offers systems for the treatment of chronic or recurrent depression, difficult-to-treat depression (DTD), drug-resistant epilepsy, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The company claims to have introduced the first VNS therapy system in the U.S. in 1997.

Its neurostimulation devices include the Model 1000 SenTiva VNS therapy system, which delivers responsive therapy for treating refractors and drug-resistant epilepsy. The FDA-approved and CE-marked system provides automatic stimulation in response to detecting changes in heart rate potentially indicative of a seizure. SenTiva is MRI-compatible.

The Symmetry VNS system is FDA-approved and CE-marked for treating DTD. The FDA approved Symmetry as an adjunctive treatment for DTD for patients 18 and older. The company’s Aura6000 implantable device for treating OSA is approved for investigational uses only. It stimulates multiple tongue muscles via the hypoglossal nerve, opening the airway while a patient sleeps. The device was developed by ImThera Medical, which LivaNova acquired in 2018.

The company is also conducting clinical trials for its Vitaria VNS system for treating heart failure. It has developed Autonomic Regulation Therapy (ART), a novel approach to controlling heart failure by balancing the brain. The Vitaria system leverages this therapy to correct an imbalance that causes the heart not to pump enough blood.
