The Dental Market: Techniques, Equipment, and Materials

December 13, 2011

Wellesley, Mass. – In a recent release, THE DENTAL MARKET: TECHNIQUES, EQUIPMENT, AND MATERIALS (HLC028D) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the U.S. market for dental care and products was valued at $13 billion in 2011 and is expected to reach more than $14.3 billion by 2016, yielding an overall compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2%.

The U.S. dental market can be divided into two segments – professional dental equipment and supplies, and consumer dental care.

The segment made up of professional dental equipment and supplies accounted for more than $8 billion in 2011, and after increasing at a CAGR of 2.1% the segment should reach nearly $8.9 billion in 2016.

The consumer dental care segment was valued at nearly $5 billion in 2011, and in 2016 should reach nearly $5.5 billion, a CAGR of 1.9%.

Dental ailments have remained remarkably similar throughout history. Decay, toothaches, periodontal disease, and premature tooth loss were documented in ancient chronicles. The exact time that dental art made its appearance is not known, but there is ample proof of its existence among the civilizations of Egypt, the Etruscans of Central Italy, the Assyrians, and populations in China, among others.

Many factors currently fuel the dental market. An aging population is a significant driver in the growth and stability of the market, and this is expected to support sales for products in the cosmetic and restorative segments in particular. Additional educational efforts directed at both consumers and professionals are also driving the market, along with the ease of use for practitioners. Consumers also have expressed a growing desire to accelerate the process for dental solutions, and a significant portion of the U.S. population is prepared to pay for high-end solutions for youthful, natural-looking smiles.

This report will be most useful to those in the fields of endodontics, oral surgery and pathology, orthodontics, pedodontics, prothodontics, periodontics, and specialty dentists, as well as marketing and managing personnel, and lastly to anyone else who has an interest in the dental industry and its outlook.
